Miller Returns to Finish His Trilogy in DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE Mini-Series
Looks like Frank Miller strikes again…again. There is no arguing the beauty and influence of Frank Miller’s BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS that graced comic book shelves back in 1986. It’s a landmark in Batman storytelling. Hell, it’s a landmark in storytelling period. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the much criticized follow up in 2001 with Miller’s THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGIAIN. Many complained about an overall disjointed story arc paired with some truly lackluster art that was borderline offensive when compared to its predecessor. So you can imagine that fans have been a bit on the fence about Miller’s return to end his trilogy.
The good news is that DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE is co-written between Miller and Brian Azzarello who seem like a match. Azzarello’s work on 100 BULLETS puts any reservations at ease. I can just imagine Miller going on a batshit crazy rant (pun intended) that is on its way to publication because he is…well he’s Frank Miller dammit…only to have Azzarello step in and say “hold up, let’s maybe rethink that just a little.” My point is, these two talents seem like they will work very well together, keep one another in check, and hopefully bust out a redeeming story arc that will put this series back in the good graces of the fans. In a similar sense, we have an all-star collaboration covering art duties with Andy Kubert taking lead working alongside original series inker Klaus Janson and Brad Anderson on color work. For those not in-the-know, that is a damn fine team and you can rest easy knowing they are around.
While full plot details have been a little sparse and kept under wraps, MASTER RACE takes place in the not too distant future after STRIKES AGAIN and will surely be a reflection on our times full of social commentary as our titular hero comes out of the shadows once again. You can also count on a plethora of cameo appearances from iconic DC characters sure to entertain. I would love to see what ol’ Bats and Superman have to say to one another this go around. Plus, I hear the first issue ends with quite a bang setting up what just may be a return to greatness. Just keep in mind, while many will label this a “Miller” book, it is in actuality an epic collaboration between Miller, Azzarello, Kubert, Janson, and Anderson in what will hopefully be something truly special.
