Marvel's ROCKET RACCOON Series Should Not Be Missed

When something is hot within the Marvel comic book universe it’s almost always played out beyond belief with a bevy of tie-ins, spin offs, and revamps. So you can probably guess that when GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY became an overnight success story (Thanks to the movie of the same name) Marvel quickly got a handful of books out there for eager readers to consume…myself included!

Sure the bread and butter comic here is Brian Michael Bendis’ GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as part of the Marvel Now! initiative. But Before you go pointing your finger (like I did above) at poor old Marvel, I will tell you that their main 2 spin off comics are pretty great. One being THE LEGENDARY STAR-LORD and the other being writer/artist Skottie Young’s take on the foul mouthed raccoon we all know and love in his ongoing book simply titled ROCKET RACCOON.

ROCKET RACCOON follows our furry little friend, often accompanied by his tree-like pal Groot, on a series of adventures set within the far reaches of space. This book really capitalizes on its science fiction roots often showing us beautifully weird vistas, interesting new alien species, and some truly kick ass gadgetry and weapons. And it’s all done so in a fun and colorful style that gives this title a true identity and charm. Anyone familiar with the RATCHET & CLANK video game series will feel right at home here. Young impressively served as both writer and artist for the first 4 issues with issue #5 onward having various artists with Young staying on as writer. So far, the artists have all maintained a quality style that compliments the stories being told.

ROCKET RACCOON will see the release of issue #8 this week hopefully continuing the wonderful momentum this book has been displaying. Here is a glimpse at what you can expect:

The meanest, toughest, wittiest, and furriest Guardian of the galaxy just broke out his BIGGEST GUNS. Because it’s ON. or ON-ER. THE MOST ON! Whatever, you get it. Join superstar Skottie Young and sensational artist Filipe Andrade (Captain Marvel, Figment) in a Rocket adventure that breaks all the rules (including grammar).

It’s easy to overlook a book like this on those crowded and often oversaturated comic book shelves, but if you did you would be doing yourself a great disservice. ROCKET RACCOON is one of the most fun and unique Marvel books on shelves today.
