DESCENDER #1 Out This Week Worth a Look
Word on the street is that Jeff Lemire’s latest book DESCENDER has been optioned for a film before it has even hit comic book shelves this week. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that’s probably a good thing. To me, DESCENDER is shaping up to be something truly special, and it’s nice to know those fancy-pants Hollywood executives agree. And did I mention the art by Dustin Nguyen is absolutely brilliant!? Well…there I said it. Here’s what Image Comics has to say about issue #1:
One young robot’s struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet. A rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey that pits humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling space opera from the creators of Trillium, Sweet Tooth, and Little Gotham. Extra-sized first issue. 30 story pages for only $2.99!
I’m not a betting man, but I’m going to go ahead and say this book is going to be talked about by quite a few nerds around the water cooler very soon. Dipping into a preview copy has shown me that Lemire and Nguyen are ready to give us an amazingly awesome lead character, a complicated and dangerous science fiction world to explore, and some beautiful art to make it all go down super smooth. While I definitely get an A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE vibe from this book, it has just enough heart and character to differentiate itself from the pack of rob-centric science fiction stories. Slap DESCENDER on your nerd radar and give #1 a shot if you know what’s good for you.
