Current State of DEADPOOL in Comics

Nerds across the globe are collectively sitting in the calm before the Deadpool storm that is upon us all. This Friday, the Tim Miller directed/Ryan Reynolds starring film DEADPOOL hits theaters in all its rated R and spandex-wearing glory! And assuming it will be as good as it looks, get ready for a crap ton of Deadpool on comic book shelves. What’s that you say!? There already is a crap ton of Deadpool on comic shelves!? Why yes…yes there is. And since Marvel just went through a soft reboot, there is no better time to get on board. Let’s see some of the many…many options already available for you to get in on!

First there is the bread and butter comic simply called DEADPOOL (Vol. 6) currently from writer Gerry Duggan and artist Mike Hawthorne with Scott Koblish serving as artist in issue #7 hitting store shelves this week in a special 25th anniversary issue. This ongoing series is where you want to go if you can pick just one. Here’s a peek at what’s in store in issue #7 this week.

Twenty-five years ago in February 1991, the New Mutants encountered a blabber mouthed mercenary who tore through Xavier’s mansion and into the very heart of the 1990s. Now, that self-same degenerate is one of the most popular heroes in the world, an Avenger, and maybe the smelliest and grossest person that tumblr swoons over. Come see how Deadpool reacts to life at the top of the world…(hint: he does not handle it well). PLUS: A full array of stories from Deadpool’s new allies, the members of the Mercs for Money! Oh…and I think there is, like…some other Deadpool thing this month people are excited about? I forget what. Parental Advisory

Did you know that Deadpool is an Avenger in the comics!? Well, ok, he’s an “Uncanny” Avenger starring in…well…the new UNCANNY AVENGERS (Vol. 3) ongoing book lead by the old and grizzled Steve “get off my lawn” Rogers consisting of a gaggle of humans and mutants alike! It’s a very interesting team and currently is on issue #4.

Another ongoing title is SPIDER-MAN DEADPOOL from writer Ed McGuinness and artist Joe Kelly. A lot of readers are saying this is one of the strongest post “SECRET WARS” Marvel books out there. And come on, it stars Spidey AND Deadpool so what’s not to like. Expect lots of witty banter between these two loud mouths! It’s a match made in heaven! Issue #2 hits this week as well! I hear Miles Morales may show up too! Cool!

BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT! The Webbed Wonder and the Merc with a Mouth are teaming up for their first ongoing series EVER! It’s action, adventure and just a smattering of (b)romance in this episodic epic featuring the WORLD’S GREATEST SUPER HERO and the star of the WORLD’S GREATEST COMICS MAGAZINE. Talk about a REAL dynamic duo!

If “ongoing” comics just aren’t your thing because you have some deep rooted commitment issues, fear not because there are a few cool mini series’ in the form of DEADPOOL: MERCS FOR MONEY (issue #1 out now) where Deadpool leads a rag tag group of fellow mercenaries and CABLE AND DEADPOOL: SPLIT SECOND (Issue #1 and #2 out now) where the classic duo mess with the timestream, constantly piss one another off, and kick lots of ass in the process. Both are great choices for those who just want a taste!

Keep in mind these are just the newest comics on shelves now. There is also a plethora of collected volumes starring Deadpool that should not be missed. And I’m sure there will be more to come soon after the inevitable success of the film. Get to the shop and scour those isles for the perfect Deadpool fit for you! Everybody’s doing it.
