Pickup SNOTGIRL #1 and #2 This Week!
I think it’s really hard to not flip through a book called SNOTGIRL that has a beautiful green-haired woman with a sickly green-tinted snot dripping out of her nose on the cover. There’s something universally appealing about the whole thing. The good news is that I did flip through the first issue which came out last month, then I bought it, then I read it, and now I’m highly recommending it. Yeah, SNOTGIRL is cool.
You know writer/artist Bryan Lee O’Malley mostly from SCOTT PILGRIM and hopefully from SECONDS. His latest book is the aforementioned SNOTGIRL where he takes on writing duties and we get art from equally talented Leslie Hung. The two make a wonderful team and this book just bursts with style, humor, and surprisingly…intrigue.
Issue #1 served as a solid set-up for our lead Lottie Person (AKA SNOTGIRL) and the world she lives in. She’s a fashion blogger who puts her best face forward online, but suffers from some serious allergies that she likes to keep on the down-low in real life. She also struggles to find new friends and rarely lets anyone see her more natural side. It’s a great reflection of our times in our media-saturated world and actually serves as a great commentary on just how displaced we can all become by residing in the digital world for a little bit too long. Deep yo.
Issue #2 lands this week and I’m definitely a fan after reading #1 especially since there was a nice twist at the end baiting me into another issue. And that’s a good thing. Here’s the setup for issue #2 if you’re caught up.
Lottie lays low after last month’s alarming events, but she still has to deal with her stalker! ‘Sounds gross! Can you change the title?’ say our moms. The hottest new series of 2016 is SNOTGIRL from BRYAN LEE O'MALLEY (Scott Pilgrim) and LESLIE HUNG!
I think I mainly connect with this series because I’m on the internet way too much and I suffer from some pretty bad allergies myself. One thing that is a bit off here, even though it looks cool, is the neon green snot pouring out of Lottie’s nose. That does not scream “allergies” as much as “infection” to me. As a sufferer, I can say neon green is not related to allergies. Basically, she needs to get to the emergency room ASAP. Oh, wait, this is a comic and not to be taken too seriously. Green snot just looks better than clear snot in a comic. I get it!
In any case, be sure to pick up SNOTGIRL #1 and #2 this week!
