Free Comic Book Day @ Mission: Comics & Art!!!
Join Mission: Comics & Art in celebrating Free Comic Book Day!
Once a year, on the first Saturday in May, comic books stores around the country give away tons of comics, for FREE!
And this year this awesome event is coming to the Mission District.
Mission: Comics will have a comic book grab bags to give away, one for kids, one for superhero fans, and one for indie fans, along with some other surprises. Check out some of the comic books that’ll be available for FREE.
In addition, Mission: Comics will have a great selection of “test drive” comics for $1, that’ll give you a chance to try out something new.
In conjunction with Free Comic Book Day, there will also be new art in the gallery by the fabulous Ben Walker, and an opening reception starting at 7pm that evening.
“Those Wicked Woods” by Ben Walker
May 1, 2010 - June 2, 2010
Opening Reception May 1st, 2010 - 7pm
Mission: Comics & Art presents, “Those Wicked Woods”, a solo show spotlighting the artwork of Sacramento based artist Ben Walker. Walker’s work draws on iconic American Old West imagery reset in a cartoon and comic book influenced world of gun-toting bears, jackalopes, and singing cowboys.
For “Those Wicked Woods” Walker uses his Old West slant to take a playful poke at things that go bump in the night. Through images of sinister forest creatures, haints, and bizarre hybrids of natural and man-made objects, the lurking dangers of the wilderness become a reflection of our own fever dreams and fears.
Walker’s artwork has recently been featured at Portland’s Grass Hut gallery, LA and SF’s Gallery 1988, and in a three man group show at San Francisco’s Super 7 Gallery. In addition to his artistic endeavorers, Walker also started the alternative drawing studio, Pompsicle in 2006, which facilitated drawing session using clothed and costumed models.
