TRANSFORMERS VS. G.I. JOE Is Something You Want to read
IDW Comics sure does have a lot of wonderfully nostalgic franchises under their command these days. Of these, two of the biggest are easily the TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE franchises. What happens when you mash the two together, start from scratch, and recruit an amazingly talented creative team? The answer of course is IDW’s TRANSFORMERS VS. G.I. JOE co-written by Tom Scioli and John Barber with some seriously impressive artwork by Scioli as well.
Fans lucky enough to attend this year’s FREE COMIC BOOK DAY were treated to TRANSFORMER’S VS. G.I. JOE #0 which was hands down the best free book of the day (no offense MOUSE GUARD). It really impressed me and revealed what would become one of my most anticipated books of the summer. I can’t get over how perfectly nostalgic the artwork is here. There’s even little bio cards to introduce the characters that resemble the character cards you could cut off the cardboard backing of your old toys and collect! It’s the little details that really sell this book for me. Not to mention that this book breaks just about every rule of comic-book paneling…in a good way.
If you missed out on issue #0 fear not! Because issue #1 of TRANSFORMERS VS. G.I. JOE hits stands this week just in time for the San Diego Comic Con. Here’s a brief synopsis:
SPACE WAR! Earth makes contact with an alien race–and G.I. JOE is on the front lines of first contact! But when the TRANSFORMERS arrive–their version of “peace” does not match our own…
As an avid fan of the toys and television shows of the 80’s, this book is right up my alley and I’m sure a lot of you out there are thinking the same thing. Instead of being overwhelmed by all the TRANSFORMER and JOE books on shelves today, why don’t you just do yourself a favor and pick up this new on-going series and just have some fun with the franchises!
Knowing about this book is just half the battle…or something like that. Go Joe!
