Absolutely agreed. The mystery and the journey are a big part of what makes PROPHET so wonderful :)
I am crushing hard on the re-boot of PROPHET. This oneric tale, set in a ravaged future universe is the comic I always wanted to read in my older brother’s Heavy Metal magazines, and is even better because it lacks the misogyny. The only comic comparison I can think to make to Brandon Graham’s story is Woodring’s Jim, as I can almost imagine them co-existing in the same universe. And the art is gorgeous, most often detailed but uncluttered, with lots of open spaces to breathe. So far in each issue the reader has been dropped into the weird self-contained adventure of a warrior/barbarian type, and in each issue there is a new clone warrior on a new planet with its own logic. I think they are all adding up to a much larger story arc, but for now I am really enjoying not knowing what is happening much of the time, and not being able to predict what is about to happen, except that some blood will be spilled, and some meat will be eaten. Richard Hell meets Tom Verlaine. As close to the avant-garde as a mainstream comic can get.
