2024 Review
In 2024 we saw a 7% increase in sales, our best year since the start of the COVID pandemic. Definitely better. But even five years later, it’s still not at all a return to pre-pandemic sales numbers.
It felt like it took lot of work to pull sales back up in 2024, and took more community involvement. Even then some of improved sales were just due to more tourists, particularly in the late summer months.
Downtown San Francisco and the Mission District still remain fairly economically depressed due to the post-covid “new normal” and work-from-home culture. It’s a real struggle for local business to survive in a city where people go out less, and shop online even more. But as whole, the year was more stable than 2023 and disregarding the coming chaos of the Trump White House, I’d be feeling fairly optimistic. But the results of the Presidential election cannot be ignored forever. Just the threat of across the board tariffs, is going to challenging, even if they may not be ultimately inplimented. Then when combined with mass deportations (or even their threat), I expect a difficult year ahead.
2025 does have the Marvel Cinematic Universe back with three releases, though the Fantastic Four seems to be the only one fans are legitimately excited for so far. I expect to sell more of Jonathan Hickman’s FANTASTIC FOUR run especially. James Gunn’s Superman is sure to sell more Superman titles, especially ALL-STAR SUPERMAN and maybe SUPERMAN: MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, as Gunn has called them out and promoted them as inspirations.
But I’m afraid the year ahead is going to be dominated by a super-villain of sorts. When Trump was in office last, our sales plummeted as locals became depressed and distracted, and discretionary funds were shifted to resistance causes.
Obviously things are different now, and it’s difficult to predict what may be coming. I expect at this year’s ComicsPro Industry Meeting well spend a fair amount of time trying to game out future possibilities, especially in the light of the just announced Diamond Comic Distributors' Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.
For most of the year, sales were only slightly better than last year and below 2022 levels until August when we saw more European tourists again. Then in October, we got a boost from DC’s “All In” initiative and their new Absolute line of comics. This carried over into November, but our holiday shopping season was lackluster, probably due to getting pretty bad rain storms on the Saturdays before Christmas and maybe some post-election anxiety.
We’ve always been a reader focused, graphic novel forward store, but this was the first year that our new single issue sales exceeded our graphic novel sales. Graphic novel sales continue to slowly decline amd new comics sales grew by 24%, partly due to DC’s Absolute line and stronger sales from more mid-tier publishers.
Graphic novel sales were behind new comic sales all year long, but they dropped off significantly, just as new comic sales grew and the Absolute line debuted. But it’s hard to understand this correlation, since those audiences are really quite different. It might be easier to connect these trend to the election. The more casual reader that purchase graphic novels were possibly more distracted by the Presidential election in October and November. Then the new single issue readers became more engaged by ABSOLUTE BATMAN, and the other DC All In releases.
2023
New comic sales grew by about 24% in 2024! But this left graphic novels and manga far from even half of our sales. Based of these percentages, we are clearly no longer a graphic novel focused “bookstore style” comic book store. We may be making more store layout changes in the months ahead to reflect this reality. And our product mix may continue to shift with changing economic conditions.
2024
For the major publishers, their sales improved slightly due to single issue sales. But their sales are still below pre-pandemic levels. IDW sales improved largely due to our ability to sell a sizable number of IDW graphic novels at a off-site event early in the year. The 40th anniversary and relaunch of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also sold more single issues for IDW, along with the success of BENEATH THE TREES WHERE NOBODY SEES.
2023
Marvel and DC’s percentage of our sales dropped again in 2024. IDW grew in it’s percentage of sales thanks to the already mentioned reasons. Other publishers remained about the same, but new publisher DSTLY’s full year of releases and their higher price point saw them grow into becoming are 8th largest publisher dollar-wise. I took a stronger position on many of their titles in 2024, but I’m worried about some flagging demand in their most recent releases.
2024
2024 graphic novel sales for our top three publishers all declined. DC actually experienced the sharpest decline of graphic novel sales, so it’ll be interesting to see if their new DC Compact Comics and DC’s Finest lines of graphic novels can reverse that trend. I also expect the upcoming Gunn-verse movies for Superman and Supergirl to help boost sales of the source graphic novels.
For Image saw the most growth across the board with about a 24% improvement over last year. Marvel did well the “Red Band” versions of WOLVERINE:REVENGE and BLOOD HUNT. DC’s Absolute titles were stupendous hits and their bundle promotions allowed us to have a enough number of copies to meet demand at least for 5-6 weeks. These Q4 releases allowed DC annual comic sales to pull up from might have otherwise been down year for them. It’ll be interesting to see how many reader stick with the Absolute titles and how the second wave preforms, but I expect they will continue to outsell the core DC line.
We continue to stock a lot less for the selves and almost all titles are subs-only past issue #3. The new reality is I’m relying on my regular pull list customers to tell me exactly what they want to buy and taking far fewer risks.
TOP 100 LISTS
Our top selling graphic novel of the year was ADVOCATE by local comics creator Eddie Ahn, with the caveat that this number includes the copies that we sold at SF Zine Fest where Eddie was the featured guest. I met Eddie over 10 years ago when he was just starting to dip into comics, so it’s great to see all his recent success!
With just in-store sales, TRANSFORMERS Vol. would have been our best-selling book. Image and Skybound made it possible to really stock up on on copies, so it was not only a best-seller, but also more profitable than other titles.
MINOR THREATS Vol. 1 also got a special boost from an in-store signing with authors Patton Oswalt & Jordan Blum.
THE MANY DEATHS OF LAILA STARR is one of the books that won’t stop selling! Which is great because it’s awesome! It’s been in our top 10 books for three years in a row now and shows no signs of slowing down!
Zoe Thorogood’s IT’S LONELY AT THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH had another strong year of sales, and I hope it continues to spread a greater understanding and compassion for mental health issues.
As feared, we did not get a SAGA collection released this year, but Vol 11 had a full years worth of sales in 2024 and placed in the top 10.
This year DC began releasing $10 versions (DC Compact Comics) of some of their most sought after evergreen titles and right out of the gate, this more economical version was a strong seller. I admit I wasn’t sure if the comic store audience would accept this smaller sized version, but people didn’t seem to mind and appreciated the lower price point. WATCHMEN led in sales for the Compact Comics, but ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, BATMAN: HUSH and BATMAN” THE COURT OF OWLS were not far behind. I expect these all to continue to sell well for the foreseeable future.
Sales of THE LAST RONIN seem to have slowed a bit, but it does continue to be a strong seller. I expect it to be a perennial, at least till the movie adaptation comes out.
Image made it economically easier to push BLACK CLOAK Vol. 1 pretty hard this year. So we did, and promoted it as a book that would appeal to SAGA readers. That seemed to pay off. It’ll be interesting to see how many people return when Vol 2 is released in 2025
And finishing off our top ten was W0RLDTR33 Vol 1, a sci-fi/horror title that almost seems custom written for a tech-focused San Francisco audience. As predicted sales of this volume accelerated from 2023, but there’s probably still more sales potential.
Just outside the top 10 was Ram V & Filipe Andrade’s RARE FLAVOURS, the follow-up to THE MANY DEATHS OF LAILA STARR, but right behind it was RADIANT BLACK Vol 1. We took a stronger position on this series in 2024 thanks to image and it paid off. We displayed the series prominently and the first three volumes all became top 100 sellers. The same thing with NIGHTS Vol 1. Image’s willingness to support these titles with more favorable terms has really helped those books sell. Next the “Gunn-verse” titles of SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW and the ALL-STAR SUPERMAN - Compact Edition continued to sell well, and I expect that to hold true in 2025 with the release of the Superman movie and increased anticipation of the Supergirl movie. It’s a pretty diverse group of crators and publishers represented in this list. Plus I also not that we has two self-published books in the top 100, Jason McNamara et al.’s San Francisco focused GHOST BAND and Michel Fiffe’s CREATING COPRA!
I also wanted to point out EMOTIONARY: A DICTIONARY OF WORDS THAT DON'T EXIST FOR FEELINGS THAT DO, a book that I’m not sure many other comic book stores carry, but that has done very well for us.

Shifting over to evaluating the best-seller by revenue and dollars earned, the biggest difference how much money THE LAST RONIN, MY FAVORITE THING IS MONSTERS Vol. 2 and FINAL CUT brought in as higher priced books. But in all honesty, these sold rather slowly and nowhere near the velocity they might have pre-pandemic. I suspect that many of the people that previously bought prestige books like those published by Fantagraphics and Pantheon are now getting their books from other online or other local brick-and-mortar retailers.
Also of note, the latest printing of the softcover edition INCAL came in with a $8 price increase, almost 27% higher than it’s previous price. This book has been a perennial top seller for us, but at what point does the price become untenable for a non-discount bookseller like us? I expect inflation to become an even bigger issue in the year to come with the Trump tariffs, or even just the threat of tariffs. all the economic data suggests that the new administration’s policies are going to lead to even greater cost increases across the board, which maybe be even more difficult in San Francisco, an already expensive city.

For single issues, DC’s Absolute line completely dominated and the reduced cost bundles made all the difference. I would love to see other publishers try this program out, at least at reasonable terms. Matching THE SEASON #1 to SAGA #55 from four years ago was an absolute non-starter. Try again when with reasonable goals.
We also moved a large number of Vaults “free to retailer” comics, while this program was not a complete success for every title it did allow us to find a higher ceiling for BEYOND REAL and UNNATURAL ORDER far beyond my expectations. Those #2 copies were sold at full price and many more subscribers than they might have otherwise.
Just by having copies available, we sold a ton of the facsimile edition of NEW MUTANTS #98, the first appearance of Deadpool in a year that he had a hit movie in the theatres.
I also want to point that returnability absolutely worked for MAN’S BEST #1 and the launch of the new EC Comics for Oni! We were able to sell many more copies than we might have otherwise.
I also want to point out that we had more non-Big Two publisher in our top 100 than in other years.
