2023 Review
2023 saw a 2% decrease from 2022’s 2% increase leaving sales right back where they were in 2021. This may not sound all that bad, but sales were down significantly for almost the entire year with only a short burst of improved sales in the last few weeks of the year. In fact we were struggling to pay the bills in October and November and had to call out to our community and let people know the precarious financial position the store was in. This helped us additional funds through a crowdfunded Kiva loan. Compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, sales were still down almost 20% and the prospect of greater recovery has felt bleak at times.
2023 started with with a historically wet winter that kept many customer away from the store and sunk sales revenue in Q1 2023, down about 22% compared to Q1 2022. People seemed to retreat into their “hunker down” habits of the pandemic. Then when the weather improved, not much changed. Q2 was down 13% compared against 2022. Many people continued to work from home and visited the store less frequently than before COVID. Some customers did return to working outside of the home and we extended our hours to 7 hours a day 4 days a week, but that didn’t appear to grow sales. Online sales became rare and infrequent. Contrary to much of the industry discussion, our comic sales remained flat for much of the year and even saw some small growth in Q4 which I think was due to getting free copies of UNNATURAL ORDER #1 and BEYOND REAL #1 from Vault Comics and some other free copies from other publishers. Where we saw the most decline was in graphic novels and trade paperbacks. We saw a 9% decline in graphic novel sales in 2023 and decline in manga sales more than doubled last year’s and dropped by nearly 30%! Expanding our manga shelf space did not work at all and we may actually reduce it in the near future.
Toy, games and other miscellaneous items continued to grow, mostly action figures. These changes left Graphic novels and manga now less than half of our sales for the first time! Things are definitely very much in flux and I’m looking for greater community involvement to help shape the future of the store. There’s some talk about bringing back dedicated community event space and some other possible ideas.
I’m trying to be optimistic for 2024 though. We’ve got a number of community projects in the works to bring in both customers and additional revenue. It’s going to be a little strange with only one superhero movie coming out in 2024. But only a few of the movies have actually proven to help sell books.
The Skybound Energon Universe comics are doing well and I was completely surprised in the unexpected outside interest in Ultimate Spider-Man this week. But as is often the case Marvel seems to be unprepared for success either and more copies won’t be available for several weeks.
Saga doesn’t appear to be returning till at least April and maybe not till even later in the year.
So far there doesn’t seem to be much excitement for Marvel’s return to events with BLOODHUNT or the upcoming changes to the X-Men line. While the Dawn of DC comics were generally quite good and designed to bring in new readers, they didn’t seem to have an impact to our DC sales or bring people in.
THE LAST RONIN has been one of the only real bright spots this past year and the sequel is coming out next month. But sequels often don’t do well sales-wise.
Vault Comic’s Free-To-Retailer program has allowed us to both give away copies to our regular subscribers and sell more copies than we would have otherwise been able to, and right now our conversion rate from UNNATURAL ORER #1 to issue #2 is at 12.5% which to my mind is a huge success. But I don’t know if that makes it economically viable for Vault. It does feel like all levels of the comic industry as feeling the need to innovate and do more to boost sales. Whatever the case while the COVID pandemic may be over, the long-term effects are very much still being felt, at all levels of society and the comic book industry. And like may others I’m also anxious about the impending presidential election. Trump’s election was devastating for sales in 2016 and 2017 and it’s very frightening on many levels that his reelection is even possible. I’m especially looking forward to next month’s ComicsPro Industry Meeting and learning more about the new ComicsPRO Advisory Committee along with the new Comet Standard for metadata.
Sales were down significantly down all year and only began to match 2022 sales in September. Since the COVID pandemic there has been no summer boost in sales as there had been in pre-pandemic years. In October declined again, but sales were up slightly in November and December.
2022
2023
For the major publishers, Marvel sales declined by 7% bringing their sales back down to pretty much where they were in 2021. This was driven by declining graphic novel sales.
DC sales fell by 5%, with some falling comics sales boosted by better graphic novel sales.
Image sales were flat which is an achievement in 2023. But I’d still like to see their comics back to selling at pre-pandemic levels. IDW sold better at Mission: Comics largely due to LAST RONIN sales.
2022
Marvel and DC’s percentage of our sales dropped slightly while IDW’s sales grew by 46% due to the aforementioned LAST RONIN. And Vault Comics sales here grew by 71%! On the other end of the spectrum, we’ve largely stopped stocking Silver Sprocket comics due the very close proximity of their retail store. They’re just 3 blocks away and the still somewhat new LGBT+ femme-focused Sour Cherry Comics is 4 blocks away.
2023
In 2023 Marvel graphic novel sales dropped here. Image graphic novel sales were flat and DC graphic novel sales grew slightly. But no publisher had a particularly strong year of graphic novel sales
Among the top three publishers, single issue sales in 2023 stayed flat for Marvel and DC. Image single issue sales actually grew by nearly 18%. I hope that bodes well and can translate into future graphic novel sales. But I have to say the trend of stocking less and less for the shelf continued in 2023 and with less titles making to the shelf, there is inherently less room for growth. Much of the time, I’m relying on my regular pull list customers to tell me exactly what they want to buy and taking far fewer risks. The strategy of trying to sell out most titles in 3-5 days has reduced our risks of unsold comics. But it has also meant we’ve had to tell irregular customers “we’re sold out” much more often.
TOP 100 LISTS
It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth and Last Ronin were the clear breakout hits of 2023 with only the sale of a few copies separating them.Sales of The Many Deaths of Lailah Starr remained very strong with the original softcover placing at #3 and the deluxe hardcover also in the top 100. Saga collection sales were good, but they are slower sellers. It took Saga Vol. 10 months to sell in large numbers and Saga Vol. 11 placed outside the top 20. But the later in the year release schedule is part of that. Who knows if we’ll get Saga Vol. 12 in 2024. It very well might be a 2025 release.
James Tynion IV increased his number of titles in our Top 100 to 12! All his non-superhero books of the past few years continue to sell and sell and sell. I expect sales of W0rldtr33 Vol. 1 to accelerate in 2024
Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars continues to sell on the belief that it’ll be the basis of some future Avengers movie.
Daniel Warren Johnson’s Do A Powerbomb made it into the top 10, tying with the perennial best-selling Incal.
It was great to see Thien Pham’s Family Style make our top 20! I know he’s put so much work into promoting it and it really is a heart-touching amazing book!
Monica was another triumph for Bay Area artist Dan Clowes But honestly I was hoping to sell more copies. I suspect many of people got their copies from other sources
For manga, both Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba Vol. 1 and Chainsaw Man Vol. 1 did well. But the surprise was how well Berserk did, in both softcover digest size and deluxe hardcover!
With some help from James Gunn, All-Star Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow both sold quite well. I expect sales on both to accelerate in 2024!

Looking at graphic novel sales by dollars, the $30 Last Ronin brought in the most money by far.
With stock availability, Marvel’s Secret Wars and Spider-Verse did very, very well. I’m encouraged that Marvel does finally seem to be doing better at keeping some of their most in demand titles in print and available.
Also The Incal is a dependable money-maker year in and year out. I would recommend any store keep copies available and prominently displayed. It will sell!
With its $13 price point, placing in the top 10 shows just how many copies of It’s Lonely At The Centre Of The Earth that we sold!
Even as the Krakoa Era comes an end, House of X/Powers of X continues to sell well here.Hopefully the impending relaunch of the X-books won’t destroy those sales

TOP 100 COMICS BY UNITS
As expected with a December 2022 release the latest Batman/Spawn crossover one-shot sold many more copies in 2023 easily securing the top selling single issue sport here. But it took nearly the entire year to sell out. Nearly 10 months of sales!
Worldtr33 seemed like a comic almost custom made for a very aware San Francisco audience and aggressive ordering on our part helped sales. And the series seems to have slowly caught on. The trend seems to be that Image Comics series tend to find an audience much slower than Marvel or DC titles and may be hurt when copies are not available for reorder.
Expanse: The Dragon Tooth was very similar with a sizable audience, but a very long sales tail that didn’t convert into sales for subsequent issues.
Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers relaunch from Skybound was the clear breakout hit! The strong creator voice and real quality also translated into strong sales for issues #2 and #3. Combined with good sales numbers for Void Rivals this indicates the Energon Universe is going to be a strong seller into 2024 and should convert into graphic novel sales as well.
Saga continued to sell well, but at a reduced number from 2022. Readers seemed less engaged and didn’t rush in to get the latest issue like they used to before the break. In fact we still have a rather sizable stack of #66 that haven’t sold yet. The issue was a little late and I wonder if people just forgot about the finale of the arc? It’s also troubling that we’ve had no indication on when Saga might return in 2024. At this point it’s not till May at the earliest. This seems sure to shed readers
I wish I had ordered more of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham. But the weak pre-orders combined with the higher price point make me hedge my bets. DC seemed to have done the same selling through the first and second print runs quickly
Facsimile issues continued to be strong sellers here with especially long tails in sales. Many of the most popular ones like Amazing Spider-Man #129 and #300 will sell and sell and sell for as long as we have copies in stock. It takes sizable investment, but evergreen sellers like these have been worth it while sales in new titles are weak.
Also of note was the debut of DSTLRY’s inaugural release - The Devil’s Cut showcasing the talent involved and the titles to come.
We also had the opportunity to give away for free copies of Unnatural Order #1, Beyond Real #1 and Nights #1, but with the additional inventory we were also able to sell a greater quantity than might be otherwise. Additionally, these free copies seemed to give subsequent issues a significant sales boost! As I said before Vault’s “free to retailer” program has been a huge success here.
